Hookworms (Internal Parasite)

Hookworms are intestinal parasites that are common in dogs and cats (dogs > cats).  Hookworms are zoonotic (contagious) to people.  Dogs and cats become infected by eating contaminated feces, penetration of skin or as puppies/kittens from their mom and her milk.  Symptoms of having hookworms include poor growth/weight maintenance, dull hair coat and diarrhea.  Treatment may be done in one or more doses and a follow-up fecal flotation should always be done due to the threat of infecting people.  Implementing a parasite prevention program year round can save your pet from illness and the threat of human infection.
