Feline Infectious Peritonitis

What is Feline Infectious Peritonitis?

FIP is an immune-mediated disorder that causes inflammation in the lining of the blood vessels.  This produces a leaking of fluid components of blood through damaged blood vessel walls.

How is FIP spread?

Most FIP infections result from ingestion of the virus.  Close contact with an infected cat or its excreta (most likely feces) appears to be required for transmission.

How do I know if my cat has FIP?

Blood tests are available to determine if your cat is positive for FIP.  A positive test will only indicate that your cat has been exposed to a coronavirus. A more definitive test is the titer which will determine the level of exposure.  The higher the titer, the more likely it is an actual FIP exposure.

How can I prevent FIP?

Preventative vaccine is available.  It consists of a series of two doses, 2-3 weeks apart.  The test will ensure that you pet is negative before beginning vaccinations; however, veterinarians usually vaccinate without testing due to time and cost constraints.
